Why EPCplanner Exists

EPC projects fail not because of bad schedules

They fail because the data behind the schedule is scattered, unverifiable and impossible to audit. Progress lives in spreadsheets. Cost lives somewhere else. Documents are tracked in shared drives. By the time you assemble a period report, you have already lost two days and introduced three opportunities for error.

On most EPC projects, the schedule lives in a scheduling tool, the commercial baseline lives in a spreadsheet, engineering deliverable status lives in another spreadsheet maintained by Document Control, procurement status lives with the procurement team, and subcontractor progress lives with the construction team. Each of these sources is updated on its own schedule, by different people, with different assumptions about what "done" means.

Reconciling these fragmented registers against the master schedule becomes a recurring manual exercise repeated every reporting period, prone to version conflicts, and difficult to defend during a claim or audit.

EPCplanner exists because this problem is structural, not operational. You cannot fix it with better spreadsheets.

Project Controls Philosophy

Principles embedded in the application

EPCplanner is built around a set of project controls principles that ensure planning, progress measurement, forecasting and reporting are generated from a single controlled process. These principles are not optional configuration choices; they are embedded in how the application structures data and enforces workflow.

Single Source of Truth

All progress calculations, forecasts and reports are generated from a common data structure. This eliminates the need for multiple disconnected spreadsheets and reduces reporting inconsistencies across project functions.

Register-Driven Progress Measurement

Progress is measured through Engineering, Procurement and Subcontract Registers using configurable stage templates and Weight Factors. Activity progress is derived from actual deliverable status rather than manual percentage entry.

Controlled Reporting Cycle

Each reporting period operates through a formal Cut-Off Date cycle. Progress updates, rollups, forecasts and reports are generated using controlled procedures to ensure consistency and repeatability.

Historical Data Preservation

Closed reporting periods remain protected through Cut-Off Date controls and Freeze Guard mechanisms. Historical project status can be reviewed and reported without retrospective modification.

Schedule Synchronisation

EPCplanner integrates with the master schedule through import and controlled progress synchronisation, maintaining alignment between schedule management and physical progress measurement.

Governance and Traceability

All controlled actions are recorded through Audit Log mechanisms, providing full traceability of project updates, administrative actions and reporting activities.

EPCplanner was developed by a project controls professional who has worked across all three major roles in EPC project delivery: as a contractor responsible for delivering progress, as an owner responsible for verifying it, and as a PMC responsible for making sense of it from both sides.

That experience across the Oil and Gas sector, covering projects in Egypt and across the Gulf region, is directly reflected in every design choice EPCplanner makes: the three-layer governance framework, the CBS weighting methodology, the period locking discipline, and the focus on auditability at every level.

EPCplanner is a commercial product developed independently. It is not backed by a large software organisation. It is backed by two and a half decades of knowing exactly what goes wrong when project data is not unified.
